During this past Golden Week break (May, 2022) my family and I spent a cool and rainy morning at Kochidani Amida-ji Temple located in the mountains of Ohara village, Kyoto. Our prearranged visit and subsequent interview and time spent with Kochidani Amida-ji’s head monk was another extraordinary episode in my mission to learn as much about the theory of “becoming a Buddha in one’s very own body”, or sokushin jōbutsu, and that of its actual practice, or self-mummification, known as sokushinbutsu.

Since 2018, my wife, our son, and I (“the research team”) have traveled throughout central and northern Honshu, visiting the temples, and meeting with the temple head monks (and occasionally with staff) to discuss and learn more about this theory and about the Buddhist monks who attempted self-mummification.

In many cases, we can view the mummified remains of the Buddhist monk which is the most sacred relic of the temple, and of the community, often a very rural village located in the mountains. This was very much the scene of Kochidani Amida-ji’s Temple. However, the mummified remains of the monk at Kochidani Amida-ji’s is not viewable, in fact, the stone tomb is forever closed. In other words, we are confronted with an axiom of the Buddhist faith, that nothing is permanent, especially that of one-self.

2022年5月のゴールデンウィークの連休中に、我が家は、京都の大原村の山間にある古知谷阿弥陀寺（こちだにあみだじ）で肌寒い雨の朝を過ごしました。
従前から計画していた訪問と、後の古知谷阿弥陀寺住職との聴き取りや共に過ごしたひとときは、私の使命である「現実世界の身のままで仏になる」という即身成仏やその実践としての即身仏に関する理論の追究に関して、新たな知見を与えてくれました。

2018年以来、妻と息子、そして私からなる「研究チーム」は、本州中部と北部を旅して寺院を訪れ、住職（場合によっては僧侶）と面会し、理論や即身仏に挑んだ僧侶について話を伺いました。

多くの場合、山深い田舎の村では、寺や地域の最も神聖な遺物である即身仏の遺骸を拝観する事が出来ます。
それは、正に古知谷阿弥陀寺の光景でした。
しかし、古知谷阿弥陀寺では即身仏となった僧侶の遺骸は拝観することはできません。
事実、墓石は永久に閉ざされたままです。
言い換えれば、私たちは、永続的なものなど何もないという仏教の信仰の公理、とりわけ自分自身の公利に直面しているのです。
